HISTORY

MLEPC has been a pillar in the South Hills community for over 221 years, sharing hope, providing service, and leading worship in Pittsburgh.

What makes MLEPC unique is its deep connection to both heritage and mission. Few congregations can trace such a long, continuous presence in one community—spanning from pioneer worship in open fields to a vibrant, modern ministry today. This legacy shapes a church culture that values tradition while embracing innovation, remaining a steadfast presence of faith, hope, and service in Mt. Lebanon and beyond.

Throughout its long history, MLEPC has been shepherded by many faithful pastors who each left their mark on the life of the church. Yet through every season, the congregation’s core beliefs, commitment to Scripture, and dedication to worship and service have remained steadfast—growing stronger with each generation.

Mt. Lebanon Evangelical Presbyterian Church traces its roots to 1802, when early settlers—primarily of English, Scotch, and Scots-Irish descent—gathered for worship in the Pennsylvania wilderness. Formally organized in 1804 under Rev. Joseph Kerr, the congregation met in orchards and groves before building its first log church in 1806. As the community grew, new buildings followed: a brick church in 1837, a larger replacement after a storm in 1871, and the current stone “Twin Towers” sanctuary completed in 1929.

In 2001, MLEPC expanded its facilities to better serve its growing ministries and community outreach. This renovation included the addition of the Fellowship Hall above the drive-in area, several interior updates, and the creation of rooftop access—now a beloved space for special gatherings and fellowship events.

Over more than two centuries, the church has undergone several name changes, most recently becoming Mt. Lebanon Evangelical Presbyterian Church in 2012 upon joining the Evangelical Presbyterian denomination. Deeply rooted in faith and community, MLEPC continues to serve as a spiritual home in the South Hills—honoring its rich history while looking forward in hope.

As a congregation, we take the Great Commission to heart. MLEPC is dedicated to sharing the gospel both locally and globally, including through our ongoing mission partnership in East Kano, Kenya—helping spread Christ’s love and hope to communities around the world.
